Say bye to Brian’s hair, for charity!

Brian swinging his long hair.

For 7 years the scent of Pantene Pro-V Ultimate Ten shampoo and conditioner has floated throughout our brewery.

Sadly that time is coming to an end.

I’ll let Brian take it from here and let you know why he’s decided to trim off 30 inches of luxurious locks.

“7 Years ago, I started working for Steel & Oak Brewing Co. and started growing my hair. Both changed my life.

Recently, there has been so much negativity in this world. I wanted to do something good and positive while I have the opportunity.  I’ve decided to cut my hair to donate, as well as to raise money for two organizations that are very close to my heart; Wigs for Kids BC, and Diversity in Brewing.

“Diversity in Brewing is a grassroots initiative dedicated to celebrating and supporting diversity in the craft beer industry.”

As a person of Asian descent, I have experienced racism firsthand my whole life. Although there has been a prevalence of sexism/discrimination in beer, there are also many amazing people.

People who make beer out of love, who support other breweries and are always willing to lend a helping hand, who care about and support their communities, who are quick to stand up against negativity and support the good.

It’s the first industry I have been a part of where people have genuinely looked past the colour of my skin, and I am proud to be a part of it.

When I first started working in the beer industry, I was surrounded by a lot of beards. I jokingly (but also factually) said I couldn’t grow a beard so I would grow my hair out instead. My plan was to grow my hair out for 6 months, then cut a sweet mullet. Once my hair started getting longer, I decided to grow it until it was long enough to donate. It ended up being a lot longer than planned (over 30 inches)!

Children with cancer are some of the bravest, most courageous human beings on this planet and I am happy to have this small opportunity to contribute.

I have set up a link to donate directly to Wigs for Kids BC. My goal is to raise $2000 to go alongside my hair donation. You can donate directly HERE.

We have also created a beer called B-Jamz as a fundraiser. Partial proceeds from this can, as well as partial proceeds from all glass sales in our tasting room for the month of December will be donated to the Diversity In Brewing Award – an annual scholarship with Kwantlen Polytechnic University to support BIPOC and LGBTQ2S+ brewing students.

Details to come for the cut in January.

Thank you all for all your support and love!

– Brian”
